Rainbow Trout in Lake Petit

Guests staying in one of the many Big Canoe rentals available can enjoy fishing in two of the three lakes found in Big Canoe.  The lake that folks fish in more than any other is probably Lake Petit.  Lake Petit is readily accessible to bank fishermen, and there are also boat launching areas for those that wouold prefer to fish from canoes, kayaks, or boats with electric motors.  No combustion engines are allowed on Lake Petit.  Most often, people can be seen fishing along the large dam and surrounding shoreline, and just because they don’t have access to a boat doesnt mean then don’t catch fish!

I happened to be driving along the road that goes over the Lake Petit dam today, and there were quite a few anglers enjoying the warm Spring weather here in the North Georgia mountains.  As I drove along, I saw one angler after another reeling in hefty rainbow trout.  I stopped and chatted with a few of the fishermen and fisherwomen.  Most were using nightcrawlers and Power Bait, and a few mentioned that while the fishing slowed in the hotter part of the day, the action around dusk into early evening was excellent.

A few points to keep in mind if you are not familiar with Big Canoe and the fishing regulations:

So, if you are spending some time in one of the many Big Canoe rentals, and you are looking for a great way to spend a few hours or even a whole day, consider the great fishing available here in Big Canoe!

Is there any boating allowed on any of the lakes? Is there a marina?

    Hi Rick -

Yes, boats are allowed on Lake Sconti and Lake Petit. Lake Petit has a marina and boat ramp, but no combustion engines are permitted on the lake, so you either have to paddle or use electric.

Many people troll for trout in various spots in Lake Petit, but fishing off the dam is very good as well. Lake Sconti has some very nice bass and crappie, you just have to know the spots. Both lakes provide a peaceful and very good fishing experience. :D
